Can Adults Get Invisalign? Age Limits Explained

This means adult Invisalign cases can sometimes take a few months longer than a comparable teen case. However, adult compliance is typically superior: adults are generally more motivated and consistent about wearing their aligners than teenagers, which often compensates for any biological slowdown.

Adults are also more likely to present with pre-existing dental work — crowns, bridges, veneers, implants and large fillings — that must be factored into the treatment plan. Invisalign aligners cannot move dental implants (the titanium post is permanently fused to the bone), so cases where an implant is adjacent to the area being treated require careful planning. The most critical prerequisite for adult Invisalign — even more important than the alignment issues being treated — is healthy gums. Adults are more likely than teenagers to have had some degree of gum disease (periodontitis), which causes bone loss around the teeth. Attempting orthodontic tooth movement in a mouth with uncontrolled active gum disease can accelerate that bone loss and cause tooth mobility or loss. For this reason, any active periodontal disease must be treated and stabilised before Invisalign begins.

This is not a barrier that rules most adults out — it simply requires that gum disease be identified and treated first, which is straightforward and usually involves a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) and a course of improved home care.
